Kayleigh McEnany, one of CNN’s in-house surrogates for President Donald Trump, claimed that President Barack Obama went golfing after Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl was murdered by terrorists.
“You have President Obama who, after the ― I believe it was after the beheading of Daniel Pearl ― spoke about how upset he was and then rushed off to a golf game,” McEnany said on CNN on Monday night.
Pearl was abducted and killed in 2002 when George W. Bush was president. Obama was a state senator in Illinois at the time.
McEnany may have been referring to freelance war correspondent James Foley, who was killed by terrorists in 2014. At the time, Obama was on vacation in Martha’s Vineyard, where he issued a statement and then went golfing. Obama was criticized over the incident, which he later admitted looked bad.
McEnany’s comments drew a swift reaction on social media, where she was blasted for botching the facts and for using Pearl’s name to score political points:
