7 Sailors Reported Missing After USS Fitzgerald Collides With Merchant Ship Off Japan

Seven sailors were reported missing after the USS Fitzgerald collided with a commercial vessel 56 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka, Japan, early on June 17, the U.S. Navy is reporting.

The collision occurred at about 2:30 a.m. local time. The USS Dewey and two additional Navy tugs were reportedly en route to the scene soon after with medical assistance. The Japanese Coast Guard was on site and providing assistance.

A video of the Fitzgerald shows obvious damage to the starboard side. The full extent of the damage and the cause of the collision were not immediately clear. Nor was it clear how many people aboard the ship may have been injured.

The ship can still move under its own power, though its mobility is limited, according to the Navy.
