Cedric The Entertainer Gets Personal With New Netflix Stand-Up Special

Cedric the Entertainer is back with his always raw brand of comedy for his new Netflix stand-up special, “Cedric the Entertainer: Live from the Ville.”

Filmed at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium in April 2015, the live special finds one of “The Original Kings of Comedy” covering topics surrounding his personal life, this year’s “crazy election,” as well as sharing his thoughts on the state of rap music today.

For Cedric, the premiere of the Netflix special couldn’t have arrived at a more fitting time in his life.

It just felt like it was time. A lot of the fans haven’t seen me on stage like that since ‘The Kings of Comedy’ tour or my HBO special,” he said during an interview with The Huffington Post. “I’m not one of these guys that shares everything on social media every day. So, I saw this Netflix special as a great opportunity to talk to my fans about family and about what’s going on in my life.”

The special marks Cedric’s first television stand-up comedy since the 2006 HBO special, “Cedric the Entertainer: Taking You Higher.”

In addition to being a fan of “The Carmichael Show,” and comedians Deon Cole and Lil Duval, the St. Louis-native says he also has an interest to see some of today’s comedians replicate his successful “The Kings of Comedy” tour.

“I think it would be hard to get this younger generation of comedians to do a tour like that, but if we were to see a ‘Kings of Comedy’ with a new crop of comedians, I’d want to see people like Kevin Hart and Kat Williams,” he said.

“I’d really be interested in seeing something where you have seasoned comedy vets bringing up comedians you’ve never heard of. You know, the diamond in the rough, pulling them out nowhere to give them a shot. It’d be like a great movie… or like ‘The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh’ [laughs].”

As for the possibility of a reunion with his “Original Kings of Comedy” co-horts, Steve Harvey and D.L. Hughley, he’s leaving the decision up to Harvey.

“Me and D.L. are currently touring for ‘The Comedy Get Down.’ Steve has a hundred TV shows and he’s retired from stand up,” he said. “So he’d know better than me if there’s a shot at changing that up.”

“Cedric the Entertainer: Live from the Ville” premieres on Netflix Sept. 16. Check out a preview of the special in the clip below.
